Full Description

The Wesleyan Chapel in Clasketgate first appears on the Dewhirst and Nichols Map of 1839. {1} The Wesleyan Chapel, in Clasket gate, is a spacious and handsome structure of white brick, erected in 1835, in lieu of the old chapel in St. Swithin's Lane, which was built in 1816. It cost £4300, exclusive of £600 paid for the ground; and two schools have since been added to it at the cost of £500. It has recently been much improved and a new organ erected, at the cost of about £1200. It has nearly 2000 sitting, and near it are large schools and two houses for the ministers. {2} The building was constructed in yellow brick with stone dressing, Neo-classical style, with three bays and a central entrance portico. The portico had four equally spaced pillars with ionic capitals. {3} The chapel on Clasketgate (‘Big Wesley’) built 1835-6 (architect W.A. Nicholson) and demolished in 1963. This chapel represents the epitome of mainstream Victorian Methodism. {4} The attached Sunday school is a later addition, being built c.1900. It was demolished at the same time as the main chapel building in 1963. {5}
