Full Description
PRN 70422
The church was constructed as part of the westerrn expansion of the city during the Victorian era. A datestone of 1867 can be found on the south facing gable-end of the building. {1}
The Independent Congregational Church on Gresham Street is first depicted on the Padley map of 1868. {2}
By 1905, the church appears to have been extended northward with the building of a Sunday School which fronted on to Allison Street. {3}
The Sunday School would appear to have become redundant by 1920. However the main chapel building still functioned as a place of religious worship at this time.{4}
By 1968 the Sunday School and adjoining buildings on Allison Street had been amalgamated to form a single factory. {5}
The chapel appears to have become redundant in the late 20th century. By the late 1990s, the main chapel building had been converted into a local medical centre and the Sunday School into offices and apartments. {1}
