Full Description

The Congregational Chapel (now United Reformed Church) was built of hard red brick in 1896 in a free Gothic style by R.C. and E.R. Sutton to commemorate the seventeenth century preacher John Robinson. The expressed intention 'to reproduce as far as possible, a structure with the distinctive marks and characteristic features of the Meeting-houses of the date in which he [Robinson] lived' has been very freely interpreted. {1}{2}{3} The Church opened for worship on 09/06/1897. Trecentary Celebrations were held in 1902 to commemorate the formation of the 1602 Separatist Church in Gainsborough. The Memorial Church was also declared free of debt at these celebrations. On 05/10/1972, the church became part of the United Reformed Church (which is a union of Congregationalists and Presbyterians). {4}{5}
