Full Description
A programme of augering and environmental sampling (SK 96600 71150) was undertaken in advance of a development to provide student accomodation on land at Ruston Way, Lincoln. Two of the sequences augered and recorded were chosen for environmental sampling as they contained organic remains including waterlogged wood, leaves and root material. {1} {2}
A watching brief carried was carried out in March 2009, on land (SK 96690 70980) immediately southeast of the area examined by the evaluation in 2004. The watching brief entailed the recording of information from boreholes and a series of geotechnical pits, as well the excavation of two trenches for archaeological purposes. The latter, to establish the level of putative mesolithic and later land surfaces, and the limits of a probable sand island. Undisturbed sand deposits were recorded at heights of between 2.10m and 3.50m OD, but limited investigations revealed no evidence of flint scatters to match those found during investigations on land further to the northeast. Organic deposits located above the sands were thought to be 19th century in date. {3}{4}
