Full Description

Former school on Pelham Road, Claxby. Four bay, single storey, T-plan form red brick building in English Garden Wall Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of concrete tiles. Three modern casement windows. Rounded arch entranceway. {1} White’s 1856 and 1872 Trade Directories both mention the school, which was supported by the more affluent members of the parish. The 1856 Directory also notes that a house was built for the schoolmaster. {2}{3} Depicted on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map in its current plan form. {4} The school closed in 1971 due to declining demand, and was subsequently redeveloped into a hostel called 'The Viking Centre', which opened in 1982. Stell describes this building as a former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, although this may be confused with the chapel to the south-east (see PRN 55064). {5}{6}{7}{8}
