Trial trenching revealed evidence for medieval quarrying. {1}{2}
Trial trenching at 21 Wragby Road in 2006 revealed two medieval quarry pits.
Later excavation during 2006 revealed eight phases of activity at the site. The earliest phase appeared to be medieval surface quarrying as most of the pits contained late 11th to mid 12th century pottery. The quarry pits appeared to have been filled in and abandoned during the medieval period also. A trackway was constructed of limestone cobbles after the abandonment. Late 10th to late 12th century finds and animal bone was found with the trackway, although some of these artefacts may be residual.
A key-hole shaped kiln had been constructed through a later layer containing 14th century pottery, suggesting it may have been late medieval in date. Two small ovens were also excavated. The ash residue from the last firing in the kiln and the residues within the ovens revealed carbonated remains of barley and bread wheat indicating these features may have been involved in malting and bread making. By the end of the medieval period the kiln and ovens had also been abandoned.
Throughout the site Roman pottery and finds were recovered. Due to these finds, the quarry pits may have been Roman in date, but equally these artefacts may have been residual. See PRN 70628. {3}{4}
