Full Description
PRN 23927
A programme of historic building recording was undertaken on farm buildings prior to redevelopment at Carter's Farm, Oxcroft Bank, Shepeau Stow. The recorded barns, which form a T-shaped arrangement to the rear of a farm cottage, were photographically recorded and a ground plan was produced. Four main phases of development were noted, along with the remains of agricultural features. {1}{2}
The earliest construction phase identified was the main north-east to south-west barn, in which recent internal structural work has been undertaken. The barn is constructed of hand-made bricks, bonded in the English garden wall style with cogging below the eaves, and would appear to have been built in the late 19th century. A stable block with an overhead hay loft abutts the north-western side of the barn representing the second phase of construction. The stable block is constructed of hand-made brick, bonded in English cross style. The third construction phase is a single storey, open-sided cattle shed abutting the south-eastern side of the barn. It is a very basic structure in comparison to the stables, with several of the walls constructed of timber partitions rather than brickwork. The final phase is represented by a lean-to tack room to the rear of the main barn. Feed troughs and hayracks remain intact within both the stables and cattle sheds. There is evidence to suggest the demolition/removal of further lean-to structures to the rear of the buildings. {1}{2}
The farmyard buildings are mostly in a good state of preservation, and are good examples of local rural vernacular architecture. {1}{2}
Carter's Farm, Whaplode. Redeveloped 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of T plan. The farmhouse was detached from the main working complex. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {3}
