Full Description

PRN 63510 The houses date from early to mid nineteenth century and are constructed in gault brick with wood eaves cornice. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} In 1901 number 30 Southgate was occupied by William Spyvee and his family ran a chemist from the premises. The Blackwell family who have been recorded as boot sales-people occupied number 28 at the same time. The recorded buildings consisted of a range of cottages, a stone two storey building, a free-standing brick built house and associated out-buildings. They were all located to the rear of 28 Southgate. The cottage range, possibly of mid nineteenth century in date was constructed of English Bond brickwork with a pantiled gabled roof. The oldest building in the range is the eastern cottage. The upstairs rooms are divided by thin stud walls made by straw woven between a timber frame which was then plastered. Internal wooden shelves were a later addition to the building indicating perhaps a change of use from a residential building to storage for commercial building. The central cottage also had shelves and sorting boxes, these may have been used by number 28 when it operated as a boot/shoe warehouse. {2}
