PRN 45782 Early nineteenth century building in gault red brick. Dated: 'National Schools MDCCCXI'. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} White's 1872 Trade Directory describes the school building on Westgate as part of 'the Old National Schools (St James')', and mentions another site on Union Street. He states the attendance of the schools as 500 children. {3} The school was closed at some point in the early 20th century, and subsequently used as a temporary 'casual ward', and later as the headquarters of the WRVS, though by 1985 it was again unoccupied. It is now in residential use. {4}{5}
