Full Description

PRN 63506 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of a new soke dyke on land at Branston Island, Branston and Mere. The watching brief identified a number of archaeological deposits and structures, including a north-east to south-west aligned watercourse (or palaeochannel). The recovery of artefacts from near the base of the feature suggests that this channel was an active component of the main river system during the medieval period. However, at only 11m wide it is not likely to have been the main channel. The presence of a net sinker and worked wood implies that fishing activities were occurring nearby. {1}{2}
