Full Description

PRN 54985 An auger survey was conducted across an area of approximately 32 hectares along the northern floodplain of the River Witham. The survey identified the ancient topography of the site, its broad environmental history, those areas of potential archaeological importance and the problems of preservation. A sequence of dated deposits (including radiocarbon dating) were retrieved ranging from the early Mesolithic, through to the Bronze and Iron Ages and into the early medieval period. A sealed and preserved Mesolithic landscape may lie beneath later alluvial sediments, with peat and silt samples dated to 9500BP {1}. Further evidence of palaeochannels and ancient topography was recorded during a topographic survey carried out by English Heritage in 2003. {2}
