Full Description

PRN 36536 Historic building recording was undertaken at Priory Farm Barns, Church Street, prior to the conversion of the barn complex to three dwellings, with a new link section and detached garages. The building survey was done prior to an archaeological watching brief (Event LI5313). The complex consists of a quadrangle of four ranges grouped around a central crewyard. The building survey established that the buildings are broadly of two distinct phases of construction. The main phase of construction was in neatly coursed lias limestone with brick detailing and gables, dates from the mid to late eighteenth century. Many of the buildings were heightened in the late nineteenth century, along with re-roofing and refurbishment. Despite its proximity to the site of the medieval priory, no evidence was found for reuse of medieval fabric, with the possible exception of ashlar stone blocks used as quoins in building. {1}{2} Priory Farm, Long Bennington. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with linked working buildings to all four sides of the yard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Located within or in association with a village. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {3}
