Full Description

Former Independent Congregational Chapel built in 1821, at Cannon Street, Louth. An opening ceremony was held for the chapel on Thursday the 29th of March, 1821. The building was constructed of brick, and was said to be capable of seating 500 worshippers. The chapel closed for religious use in 1919, and was subsequently converted into the Playhouse cinema, which opened in 1921. This conversion involved considerable alterations to the structure, with a new west frontage being added. Prior to its conversion, a remark to the Census of Religious Worship in Lincolnshire stated that '… the chapel is rather thinly attended, the building being too vacant and consequently cold.' {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
