Full Description
An archaeological watching brief and excavation at the New Learning Centre, Lincoln College, Abbey Street, identified a number of deposits dated to the Roman-British period, including possible metalled road surfaces (or possibly a courtyard), along with significant quantities of pottery. The pottery dated the surfaces to the late 2nd to early 3rd century AD.{1}{2}
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Lincoln College, Catherdral Street. The watching brief exposed Roman walls, terracing and a burial associated with extra-mural activity. Re-examination of the City of Lincoln Archaeology Unit excavation results identified walls which pre-date the Friary church and may actually be Roman. The footings found below the friary walls may form part of a rectangular structure 5.25m wide from east wall face to east wall face. If this interpretation is correct and there is a Roman building running through the centre of the site beneath the church, it is possible that the Roman road which was tentatively suggested running through the Abbey Street site is now less likely and that the recorded surfaces are probably those of a yard. {3}{4}
More Roman remains were discovered during another watching brief at Lincoln College. These remains include walls, surfaces and pottery and probably represent extra-mural activity, possibly shops and houses. Full interpretation of these features was impossible due to the limited scope of the investigation. {5}{6}
