Full Description

Workmen digging the foundations for extensions to Lincoln Technical College, Cathedral Street, Lincoln, discovered a Roman pottery kiln dated to the late 1st to early 2nd century AD. The kiln, which had been built in a small pit in the ground, was thought to be rectangular in form. The oven in which the pottery was stacked measured three feet by two feet inside. It was lined with clay which formed a wall six to seven inches in thickness, giving an overall measurement for the kiln of four feet by three feet. The vessels produced were domestic mortaria, with the pots stacked in the kiln in an inverted position one upon the other and packed with sand to prevent them coming into contact with each other. Evidence of two stacks were found and, from the remains from the workmen's trench, there would appear to have been two other stacks. They were well fired but the heavy rims had cracked at intervals during the firing process. The dating and classification of the rim sections has enabled the date of the kiln to be established. The rim-shape belongs to the late first or early second century AD. Each vessel had been stamped with a single potter's mark: VITALIS. There are no records of mortaria found elsewhere bearing this stamp, and it was believed that at the period of the kiln's activity coarse pottery made in Britain was commonly used locally and not carried long distances to consumers. {1} Later research casts doubt on the form of the kiln; with the structural evidence as recorded being insufficient to support a rectangular chamber. Whether it is an actual kiln is uncertain, though pottery was undoubtedly produced in the immediate vicinity. {2}
