Full Description

45601 Stamford gas works was the first gas works to be completed in Lincolnshire in 1825, and Boston, Gainsborough and Louth followed in 1826. By 1845 sixteen Lincolnshire towns had the benefit of gas, provided by local companies from works usually located near a waterway for their supply of coal. Horncastle gas works was completed in 1833. {1}{2} The gas works is shown on maps dating from 1884 up until the 1970s. {3}{4}{5} The gas works were erected in Foundry Street [to south east of Albert Road] in 1833. The Local Board purchased the works in 1876 and improved the gas supply to the town. {6}
