An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the excavation of foundation trenches for a house and an associated detached garage at Plot 3, The Green, Orby. The watching brief identified three undated east to west aligned linear features within the groundworks for the house plot. Although it is possible that these were ditch cuts, they are more likely to have been plough furrows. A small collection of artefacts were recovered, including fired clay and animal bone and two sherds of medieval pottery from a topsoil deposit {1} {2}

Previous evaluation (LI1501) and geophysical survey (LI1497), showed that whilst archaeological remains extended across the whole of the development area, they were concentrated along the three sides of The Green that border roads. This is supported by the results of the watching brief on Plot 4, which showed that the area surrounding Plot 4 was less intensively occupied than Plot 5 which lies alongside the road {3} {4}

The watching brief identified four undated features within the groundworks; a small pit in the centre of the house plot, which was cut by a later north to south aligned ditch. A sub-rectangular pit was recorded to the east of the ditch. The fourth undated feature was an east to west aligned ditch, recorded immediately southwest of the house plot {5} {6}
