Full Description

Middlecott House was the former grammar school, rebuilt in 1851 by Henry Clutton. Red brick and asymmetrical, in a plain domestic style of Butterfield. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the school was founded in 1624 by Sir Thomas Middlecott to teach grammar to the children of Kirton, Sutterton, Frampton, and Wyberton parishes. In 1851 and 1861 the Court of Chancery issued new schemes for the management of the school. The schoolmaster was required at the time to be a graduate of either Oxford or Cambridge. {2} The school can be seen in its current plan form on the 1905 OS map of Kirton. {3} The building is now in use as a private childcare centre.
