It seems very probable that the Roman Road of Mareham Lane (Margary no. 260) which has been traced to the east of Sleaford (see PRN 63154), was also directly connected to Lincoln by a road which is generally represented by the present main road, the A15. This course represents a more direct route than the slightly more winding route along Bloxholm Lane (se PRN 60813). For the first six miles to near Brauncewell this road is somewhat winding, and the exact route probably awaits discovery, but for the rest of the way it runs in notably straight lengths which frequently change direction on high points, and is much raised. It joins Ermine Street at Bracebridge Heath on the outskirts of Lincoln. {1}
During works along the A15 for the laying of a water pipeline, at (SK 9889 6638) the upper surface of what is believed to be one of the continuations of Mareham Lane from Sleaford was identified. The eastern flanking ditch may also have been located. {2}
