Full Description

PRN 70376 Soil test pits were dug in 2003 to check the extent of diesel contamination at the Junction site prior to development. These revealed in situ riverine deposits approximately 1.8m below the surface. These contained animal bone, worked wood and possibly leather. Elsewhere on the site another organic deposit was encountered at a depth of between 2.5m and 3m. This deposit was rich in snails and has high palaeorganic potential. This deposit was however highly contaminated with diesel. {3}{4} An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for student flats and mixed-use retail development on land at St. Mark's Street and Brayford Wharf ('The Junxion'), Lincoln. A pit excavated to assess diesel contamination revealed an undated peat horizon (c.3.7m below modern ground surface) and a series of riverine deposits; typical of the known stratigraphy of the area from prehistory through to the medieval period. {1} {2}
