Full Description

PRN 36514 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land between Nos. 32 to 38 Wharf Road, Stamford to monitor the excavation of groundworks for an extension to commercial premises. The watching brief identified a silty clay layer (possibly an alluvial deposit) which contained a single sherd of Bronze Age pottery. Later material was not found in this layer, so it would appear that the deposit was undisturbed. Pottery of the Bronze Age does not occur in abundance and even a single sherd may indicate activity of this period on the site, or in the vicinity. No pottery of Bronze Age date had previously been recovered from the town. {1}{2}
