Full Description
PRN 45508
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the machine excavation of foundation trenches for a new residential building and associated garage on an area of land to the east of Chestnut Avenue, Bucknall. The groundworks produced evidence of late post-medieval to early modern buildings on the site. The structure encountered was probably a farmstead, with two wings forming a courtyard onto the road and a cellar structure which had been used to store slurry. The farmstead is visible on the 1951 Ordnance Survey Map. Demolition of the farmstead occurred at some point in the mid to late twentieth century, as it is no longer evident on the 1999 Ordnance Survey Explorer map. {1}{2}
Castanera, Bucknall. 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of U plan. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. The farmhouse is the only surviving historic structure. Located within or in association with a village. {3}
