Full Description

Field walking to the north of Stragglethorpe Grange in Spring 1978 produced a scatter of limestone and a heavy concentration of Romano-British grey ware and Samian sherds. Part of a worn and battered Roman altar was also found on this site. Also found in the southern part of this site in 1980 were several Roman coins and other metal fragments. These included an Antoninianus of Carausius (287-93AD), a Follis and a bronze coin of Constantine (307-37AD), an Antoninianus of Gallienus (253-68AD), and 9 illegible Roman coins. Two bronze harness rings and a fragment of D-section bracelet were also recovered (in identification reports 1519-20). Further field walking of the same site in early 2004 produced further Samian ware, some of which appeared to be decorated. {1}{2}
