The second element is Old Danish, meaning 'a secondary settlement' (of Brant Broughton). {1}{2} In 1563 the Diocesan Returns include Stragglethorpe under Beckingham because of its dependant chapel. 10 households were recorded. {3} This had risen slightly by the late 17th and early 18th century to 12 families. {4} The population in 1801 was 79, peaking in 1821 at 100.
