Full Description

PRN 70357 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in two separate areas (A and B) at the northern end of High Street, Lincoln. Both excavations were prompted by urgently required repairs to the gas main network. In both cases, archaeological excavation were of very limited extent. However, in the northern part of Trench B, a section of limestone wall was revealed. The wall formed the foundations to the public house at the northern end of High Street, and comprised three to four courses of mixed limestone and brick, bonded with lime mortar. Especially prominent was a single large limestone block, which measured approximately 1m in length. This seemed unusual when compared with the remaining stonework, which consisted on blocks of no more than 300mm in length. Although no moulding or tooling was observed, it is possible that the block may represent re-used material from a much earlier structure, possibly of Roman origin. No dating evidence was retrieved from the wall {1}
