Full Description

PRN 45500 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land at Main Road, Greetham. The watching brief monitored the excavation of foundation trenches for a new residential development. Located along the southern boundary of development plot was a large linear feature. This was aligned east to west and perpendicular to Main Road and was over 8.5m long, wider than 3.5m and 1.2m deep. A single fill of brown clayey silt was recorded that contained late post-medieval pottery, glass, tile and bone. Finds retrieved from the ditch comprise a range of dating from the 17th to early 20th century. Although entirely redeposited with later material, the 17th century material was moderately numerous, which perhaps suggests occupation of that date close by. The location of the ditch would suggest it served a boundary function and was subsequently backfilled with rubbish {1} {2}
