Full Description
PRN 54921
A rapid walkover survey was undertaken along the proposed route of the Holton-cum-Beckering to Welton Gathering Centre Pipeline (c.11km). The walkover survey identified a scatter of Romano-British pottery and tile immediately south of The Old Vicarage, Barlings. The scatter probably indicates an occupation site in the close vicinity, although not necessarily affected by the pipeline route. A Roman site here would be very significant as it is at the northern end of the identified causeway leading to Barlings Abbey (PRN 54781) {1} {2}
During monitoring along the electricity cable renewal route in 2009, a north to south aligned ditch or pit was revealed. It contained two sherds of 3rd century pottery and four fragments of animal bone. {3}{4}
