Full Description

PRN 36497 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during residential development on land to the rear of The Cottage, Lower Road, Hough on the Hill. The watching brief monitored the excavation of foundation trenches for the new development and identified a number of undated deposits and features. These comprised a series of mounded layers, dumped deposits, a pit and a post-hole. An artificial mound was identified along the western edge of the levelled area, composed of an initial deposit og greenish brown silty clay, overlain by a mottled greenish yellow and brown silty clay. The function of the mound is unclear, although the proximity of a motte and bailey castle (PRN 30279) may be significant. It is possible that the mound may represent additional fortifications to the northeast of the motte, or perhaps a second (although smaller) bailey which may have been required as the church dominated the bailey west of the castle. This arrangement appears visible as slight earthworks on early maps of the village. The function of the pit and post-hole are equally unclear {1} {2}
