Full Description

PRN 45489 Toft Mill. Open trestle mill, dated 1730. Worked until early 1930's, gone by early 1970's. {1} Friskney Tofts mill was built in 1730 and was still working in 1923, although it was blown down in November 1939. An inscription reads "IOSEPH WAKELEY/KEPT THIS MILL IN/THE YEAR OF OUR LORD/1733 1754 LRBK' alongside a carving of a rigged ship. The wheel tapered from 24 inches square to fiften inches. There were also two small wooden four-bladed wind indicators on either side of the first floor. By their rotation or otherwise, they enabled the miller to see if the wind was veering and in which direction. A bell alarm was buried in the grain in the hopper feeing a pair of stones, so that when the grain ran low and uncovered the bell, it rang. {3}
