Full Description
PRN 60336
A lost village of Sapperton is mentioned in the Returns for Lincolnshire from the commission of enquiry of 1607. It is thought that the Sapperton that is mentioned in the list may be the lost Sapperton of Welbourn. The manuscript describes ' great depopulations and decay of husbandry' and 'seven cottages only left'....'Most of these depopulations done forty years since.' {1}{3}
Sapperton is mentioned in the enclosure award. The Little Manor House of Sapperton belonged to the Welby family, and it is said to have stood by the side of Lincoln to The earthworks, which lie to the south end of the village, may be evidence of the contraction of Welbourn. It has also been suggested these earthworks may relate to Sapperton. {5}
