Full Description

PRN 23870 An archaeological watching brief and selected excavation was undertaken on a plot of land at Backgate, Cowbit. The watching brief and excavation was undertaken during housing development, and identified a number of post-medieval features located within the south-westerly area of the development site. Although no evidence of any structural remains were recorded, an intense area of activity was envisaged. A number of linear features were recorded (predominantly ditches). The ditches retained a similar orientation to those of medieval date and were believed to have also maintained a comparable functional utility (as field or property boundaries). A number of semi-circular, rubbish pits were also found on site. The moderate collection of early post-medieval pottery fragments recovered from the features was of moderate to high local significance, with the assemblage dominated by forms associated with the storage, transfer and consumption of fluids (eg. pancheons, cisterns, jugs, cups, tygs and tankards). This biased assemblage indicates that the material may have been derived from an inn, tavern or similar establishment in very close proximity to the site. Handmade brick and tile were moderately abundant and probably reflect the proximity of buildings of the period. Environmental samples taken from a post-medieval ditch contained a low density of charred refuse including cereal grains, fruit stones, pulses and weed seeds and abundant fragments of charred root, rhizome or stem. The assemblage probably derived from burnt litter, roofing or bedding materials. An absence of any artefactual material later than the 18th century was recorded, and would tend to suggest that there was a cessation of activity on the site at that time {1} {2}
