Full Description

Numbers 25 and 26 form a single block facing west across the east end of the street. The buildings date to about 1765 (and earlier). The buildings have two storeys and attics, with the walls built of ashlared limestone. The block has a modillion eaves cornice and small parapet with three stone urns and a ball finial. It has a Mansard roof of stone slates with stone capped gable ends. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} No.25 is part of a pair with no.13 Maiden Lane (see PRN 38602). It was built around 1766 by John Hopkins who also built no.26 in the following year. No.25 has a two storey bay window on the street front. The rear wall has a timber framed, jettied upper storey over a rubble lower wall. The interior has some 18th century decoration including an entrance hall with half columns and arches. No.26 consists of three ranges around a small garden. The east range was formerly a carriage house which was rebuilt in the early 19th century. The south elevation of the north wing is similar to designs by George Portwood for a house for William Stukeley in 1741 (which was never built) although on a smaller scale. The interior has various 18th century features including a staircase, a stone fireplace of unusual design and a plaster ceiling. {2}{3} 25 St Mary's Street is featured in a series of photographs, taken during a site visit in August 2002. The views are primarily of the rear of the house, and were taken to assess the impact of the proposed removal of a 20th century porch. {4} A programme of historic building recording was conducted in March 2003, during the removal of a 20th century porch to the rear of 25 St Mary's Street. Removal of the modern structure revealed traces of an earlier porch, underneath which the jettied structure of the rear of the house could be seen (after the second porch structure was also removed). Timber studs and brick nogging were also revealed, as was the underside of the first storey floor. The methods of construction revealed during this work suggests an earlier date of construction for the building than the late 18th century date assigned to 25 St Mary's Street. Jettying is a structural technique widely used from the 15th to 17th centuries, and the nogging is likely to be 17th century or later. {5}{6}
