Full Description

PRN 54895 An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during residential development at Main Street, Normanby-by-Spital. The watching brief monitored the excavation of foundation trenches for three houses, and identified two undated pits and a small amount of pottery dating to the 18th to 19th century. The first of the pits was 1.4m long, over 0.65m wide and greater than 0.18m deep. The second pit was rectangular in plan, over 0.86m long by 0.62m wide and 0.28m deep and contained a fragment of burnt limestone and a cow bone. Both pits may have served an agricultural purpose prior to the development of the land. The pits were sealed by an undated subsoil and a levelling deposit. Pottery of the 18th and 19th century and glass of 19th to 20th century was found in topsoil {1} {2}
