Full Description
PRN 54871
An archaeological survey was undertaken on lands forming part of the Brocklesby Estate, comprising field observation and rapid fieldwalking (on a non-collecting basis) and a desk-top assessment. This was done to appraise the archaeological resource of the estate as part of a wider Heritage Landscape Management Plan. The survey identified a large linear earthwork, which forms the parish boundary between Great Limber and Caistor. The earthworks take the form of massive double ditches with three banks aligned east to west. They continue as earthworks for a distance of 1.2km. Towards the eastern end the line is broken at TA13550515 by the circular mound which is thought to be a barrow (PRN 54872). The banks take a strategic line for part of the length along a natural ridge. From the banks at this location, there are extensive views to the north and south. The earliest reference to this parish boundary dates from c.1150. Later references are to the 'Audleybie Bank' on a map of Great Limber dating to 1676. This large earthwork could not have been constructed through woodland and clearly pre-dates the use of the area as a wood. The ditch and bank system most probably represents a rare survival of a triple ditch boundary of likely Iron Age to Roman date, with subsequent remodelling during the Late Saxon and medieval periods. {1}
In the wood called Brompton Dale by the Caistor Double Gates there is an obviously man made earthwork, very noticeable on the west side, which is the boundary between Limber & Caistor parishes. It follows no definite line, but sprawls about anyhow. This feature is a hollow way with (in places on the south side) an old hedge bank. Centred to TA 129 053, it probably delineated the parish boundary prior to the extensive planting and agriculture in the area. {2}
