Full Description

PRN 36485 An archaeological excavation was carried out on a 24m by 21m area, located at the frontage of South Road, Bourne (Event LI4390). The excavation identified material and structures dating to between the 12th and 14th centuries, when the site was used for industrial purposes. A hearth and spread of burnt red sand were identified associated with metalworking. The limit of occupation appears to be defined by fence structures to the west, beyond which were pits probably used for refuse. The northern boundary established in the Roman period was still in use during the 13th century. In the later medieval period, the land reverted to agricultural use with the remains of ridge and furrow evident but no dating material was retrieved (PRN 34890) {1} {2} Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching - Event LI4389) found wasters (kiln rejects) of 13th century date in a fabric which had not previously been recognised as coming from Bourne. It is assumed that they must have come from kilns close by. This extends the date range and location of the known medieval pottery industry in the town {1} {2} During trial trenching at TF 09505 19662, a possible road or path was uncovered in the eastern part of the site. Its foundation trench cut into deposits containing 11th-14th century pottery, suggesting that it was established during the medieval period. It is probably related to the medieval activity immediately to the south (see above), and may have served as a back lane to South Street. After the road went out of use, the site appears to have reverted to agriculture. {3}{4}
