Full Description

PRN 36483 An archaeological excavation was carried out on a 24m by 21m area, located at the frontage of South Road, Bourne. The excavation defined the eastern boundary of a second century Romano-British occupation site. The site was defined by a substantial 4m wide, northeast to southwest aligned ditch, into which a smaller, east to west aligned ditch fed from the north. Within the confines of these ditches were large pits which had been excavated for their clay, presumably to supply pottery kilns previously discovered 300m to the south of the site (PRN 33196). With the advent of flooding (presumably in the late second century) the site may have been abandoned for a short while. The site appears to have been used exclusively for industrial purposes at this period. {1} {2} An archaeological watching brief was conducted during the excavation of nine geotechnical pits prior to residential development on land at South Fields, South Road. The watching brief identified a number of clay extraction pits for pottery production. {1} {2} An archaeological watching brief was conducted on land at Southfields, South Street as an additional part of the archaeological assessment of the area. The watching brief monitored groundworks for three plots of the residential development, and identified two clay extraction pits and a limestone rubble layer (a yard) previously recorded in a prior archaeological excavation. {1} {2} Roman activity on the eastern side of the site ranged in date from the second century to the third and fourth centuries and was seen during trial trenching at TF 09505 19662. It comprised a period of pit digging for clay extraction followed later by settlement, a broadly similar sequence of activity as has been found on adjacent sites. {3}{4}
