Full Description

PRN 70344 An archaeological watching brief was conducted on land at 20 / 21 Queen Street, Lincoln monitoring groundworks associated with the erection of a new two-storey dwelling. The work identified a large rubbish pit, containing animal bone, mollusc shell and numerous pottery sherds dating to between the 12th and 13th century. The pit was filled in at some point during the late 12th or 13th centuries, at which time the area surrounding the development site was part of the medieval suburb of Wigford, which was primarily occupied by housing. It would seem likely that the refuse pit would have been located in a garden plot attached to one of these dwellings {1} {2}
