Full Description

PRN 70337 Contractors excavating a sewer pipe recovered two sherds of a large cremation or burial vessel. A grey fabric with a design of linear rustication executed below the shoulder and towards the base, surviving as a complete base and a fragment from the shoulder to the base. Vessels of this type were manufactured at the North Hykeham kilns during the later 1st to early to mid 2nd century and were often used as cremation vessels. The vessel, in association with other pottery finds (PRN 70335 and 70336), indicates the presence of a cemetery in the immediate vicinity, potentially in use from the later 1st century until the early to mid 3rd century (PRN 70338) {1} {2}
