Full Description

Earthwork remains of medieval settlement, including possible tofts and crofts, were identified in and around the present village on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. See notes. {1} A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks at Chapel Lane, Fulletby (TF 2973 7343) prior to development. Two areas of pits were uncovered. In the southern area of the site there were rubbish pits dating to the late 12th to 16th centuries. These all contained a variety of animal bone and pottery sherds, implying that they were of domestic use. In the northern part of the site, there were two pits which were dated to the late 12th to early 13th centuries which contained industrial waste from smelting and smithing. This appears that the industrial practices were being undertaken away from the domestic area. {2}{3} A watching brief during the laying of electricity cables recorded post-medieval pottery and field drains along the High Street and Winn Lane. A small section of wall was found at High Beeches, TF2982 7329, although thought to be part of a mud and stud cottage that was demolished in the 20th century there is no evidence to support this. {4}{5}
