Full Description

PRN 36467 An archaeological investigation was commissioned by English Heritage to expose and record the surviving remains of the village cross at Dunsby (PRN 33115). The cross base was found to consist of a single limestone block 0.90m by 0.90m by 0.3m deep. Exposed on the southwest and southeast sides of the cross base was deposit of compact, pale brown sandy clay with frequent small to medium limestone and occasional brick fragments. Fragments of 19th century pottery and glass were recovered from this deposit. The absence of any material earlier than the 19th century suggests that archaeological deposits dating from before this peiod are absent from the area, or were not disturbed by the development. This may support the notion that the cross was placed within a village green setting {1} {2}
