Full Description

PRN 45102 Systematic fieldwalking was undertaken as part of a multi-phase, non-intrusive examination of a proposed mineral extraction site, on land south of Biscathorpe in South Willingham parish. Fifteen pieces of struck or modified flint were recovered during the fieldwalking survey. These items ranged in date from the Mesolithic period to the Bronze Age. The small size of the assemblage makes it difficult to establish the nature of activities taking place on the site during prehistory; whether they represent a continual presence from the Mesolithic through to the Bronze Age or, alternatively, a number of unrelated events occurring over thousands of years. The type of flint artefacts suggests that the early stages of flint knapping would have occurred in the area, while the lack of tools may be an indication that the site was not occupied in the prehistoric period, but the small size of the assemblage precludes any confidence in this statement. {1}{2} 7 trial trenches were excavated at field no. 6217, near Biscathorpe in respect to a proposed drilling platform. Three pieces of struck flint dating to the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age were recovered. One was a side and end scraper, and the other two pieces were secondary flakes. {3} {4}
