Full Description

PRN 13666 Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) on land at West Street / George Street identified a possible quarry pit. This contained extensive quantities of ceramic building materials, some of it observed to be wasters. In addition to brick and pantiles, a small quantity of pottery and glass of 17th to 18th century date was also retrieved from the quarry fill. It seems likely that this quarry, and its contents, signal brick and tile making in the immediate area in the 17th to 18th centuries. There is no known historic or cartographic evidence for brick making in this part of Boston. No brickyards are shown on the 18th to 19th century maps of the area, though the 1829 plan does reveal two large ponds just to the southeast of the site. These may have originated as clay pits / quarries but are not shown on the 1741 map. The quarry may have also served as a refuse pit, with the inclusion of discarded leatherwork and other domestic / personal items. {1} {2}.
