Full Description

PRN 13665 Archaeological evaluation (seven trial trenches) on land at West Street / George Street identified post-medieval activity comprising dumped and construction/demolition deposits. Individual walls of buildings or other structures were identified in Trenches 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, but none of these betray any clear indication of the type of buildings they represent. More substantial building remains, including two sides of a cellar in Trench 7, and several small but probably related structures in Trench 6, were exposed. Some of the structural remains in Trench 6 appear to be brick floored passages and there is evidence to suggest some were raised and rebuilt in broadly the same location after making up of the ground level. A brewery is shown on a map dated to 1829, and some of the features identified in Trench 6 may be part of that building. However, shops and houses were also located in this area and recorded on the 1829 map, and the identified walls may be one of these more domestic and mercantile structures. Domestic debris and features (in the form of pits and ditches) did not occur extensively at the site, which suggests that little of the activity in the area was general habitation. {1} {2} A subsequent watching brief in April 2009, on land forming the eastern part of the evaluated area, resulted in the identification of further post medieval structures and deposits. The earliest features appear to have been a brick cistern or cess pit and a brick wall, both located in north-eastern part of the site (in the vicinity of Trial Trench 6, as detailed above) and dated as 17th or 18th century. Further to the south, a brick-built hearth may have related to the first wall or to 18th/19th foundations found in the same part of the site, while a cobbled surface was revealed in the eastern part of the site. Finds from the site included a number of complete glass bottles suggesting the presence of a late 19th/early 20th century bottle dump, and a clay pipe waster which may have derived from a kiln located to the north of West Street. {3}{4}
