Full Description

PRN 36465 Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) on land at Belton Street, Stamford identified substantial building remains, as walls and mortared floor levels lying underneath the remains of a 19th century building (PRN 36463). The walls seem to enclose a small, rectangular room or building; the southeast internal corner of the structure shows re-profiling by the addition of rough limestone blocks and mortar to match the curving profile of the inner northeast corner. Earthen and mortared floor surfaces were identified within the structure laid directly upon a buried topsoil {1} {2}. The remains could be related to (or form part of) a post-medieval house built in the early 17th century, and demolished in 1775. However, this cannot be substantiated, as the exact location of the house is not known {3}
