Full Description

PRN 23853 An archaeological watching brief monitoring development on land at Barge Close, Spalding identified a large north to south aligned linear feature, situated towards the eastern side of the site and appearing in all trenches examined. Its uppermost fill was of modern origin, comprising rubble and metal scrap. Below this lay a homogenous dark brown silt; possibly dumped as deliberate backfilling. The base of the feature was not observed. It seems probable that the channel represents a former drainage dyke, which was later piped and back-filled in recent (modern) times. A watercourse that matches the alignment of this feature is depicted on Morley Newborn Dwg. No. 1699.01.22. {1}{2} Appears to follow the course of the Exeter Drain {3}
