Full Description

A post-Medieval quarry has been noted in Panholes Plantation from aerial photographs. {1} On the 1st Edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map, published in 1888, the quarry is labelled as an 'old stone pit', and a lime kiln is depicted in the centre of the pit. The 2nd Edition 25" map shows a deeper earthwork, labelled as a 'chalk pit', with no kilns depicted. {2}{3} The quarry can be seen on LIDAR imagery, and earthworks are visible within the pit that may represent the remains of former lime kilns. {4}
