Full Description

PRN 44851 Features relating to this site and/or the Iron Age occupation are visible on geophysical survey data gathered in 2002. {7}{8} Archaeological evaluation (trial trenching) was undertaken on land adjacent to the route of the Partney Bypass, in advance of badger sett construction (as part of the overall construction scheme). A series of ditches, pits and postholes were excavated, containing artefacts ranging from the early 1st to the mid to late 4th Century AD. Conjectural evidence for agricultural activity, possibly in the form of corn drying (corn driers) and processing, as purported by cereal rich carbonised plant material found in the fills of ditches. The physical and artefactual evidence indicates that a prestigious occupation site lies close by, possibly to the northwest. {1} {2} The site lies immediately north of a series of cropmarks identified from aerial photographs (PRN 44227) and it is feasible that the two sites are related, possibly representing a multi-phase settlement and agricultural complex. {3} An area immediately to the east of the previous investigations was fully excavated prior to construction of the by-pass. This revealed part of a complex multi-period settlement and ritual site which extended beyond the excavation area. The settlement and ritual activity on the site began in the Iron Age (see 46451) and some elements, including a temple/shrine complex, continued in use through a transitional period into the Roman period. One of the burials to the east of the shrine contained late 1st century AD grave goods. By the early 2nd century AD the temple and also the main enclosure ditch were no longer in use but features and artefacts indicate continued occupation of the area until the late 2nd century AD. No later material was found. {4}{5}{6}
