Full Description

36456 Roman pottery was found in large quantities in a field in Long Bennington, adjacent to the County Boundary. The assemblage included undecorated Samian, grey wares, mortaria and cheese press sherds, dating from the first to the fourth century. {1} Pottery, building material and small quantities of metal finds including coins, brooches and domestic metalwork have been recovered from this field for at least 30 years, mostly found by the farmer and his family. In recent years a local amateur archaeology group has taken an interest in the site and prepared a preliminary register of the finds so far along with photographs of them. They have also carried out site visits and a small geophysical survey which revealed a possible rectilinear feature. {2}
