A pre-planning archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the site of the former Eastgate Motors, Wragby Road, Lincoln (10th of February to 12th February 2003). Two trenches were investigated, on the southwestern and eastern sides of the site. Only Trench 1 exposed archaeologically significant remains; primarily a medieval oven or kiln (dating to the 13th century) that contained redeposited, high status, architectural stone fragments, and a contemporary wall foundation. Trench 2 exposed evidence relating to modern activities, and one side of a medieval limestone quarry (backfill dating to the 13th / 14th century). Late medieval and early post-medieval deposits were not exposed in either trench; possibly due to large scale land clearance as a prelude to industrial development in the 19th century. {1} {2}
Building remains of the 19th and 20th century were recorded during excavation, but a separate monument record was not created for these features. {1}{2}
