Monument record MLI84675 - Roman soil horizon by the Brayford Pool

Summary

Roman soil horizon by the Brayford Pool

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

PRN 70327 Investigation of buried deposits with environmental analysis and radiocarbon dating has produced results consistent with previous findings: that Brayford pool has a stratigraphy stretching back to at least the late Bronze Age, and that sedimentation was predominantly 'natural' in origin until the late Iron Age/early Roman transition. During this phase, land clearance and arable crop cultivation take over (with increasing levels of wheat pollen) leading to the formation of a Roman soil horizon, probably agricultural in origin. The horizon was dated to the 1st to 3rd century AD by pottery retrieved during excavation. {1}{2}
